Common RV Issues - And How to Fix Them Fast

There’s nothing worse than arriving at a campsite only to realize your fridge isn’t cooling, your power is out, or your slide-out won’t budge. Luckily, most RV issues start small and can be fixed quickly—if you know what to look for.

Before calling for service, try these DIY troubleshooting tips to solve some of the most common RV problems.

RV Won’t Power On or Battery Seems Weak

Symptoms: Lights are dim, outlets aren’t working, slide-outs move slowly, or nothing turns on.

Fix It:

• Check that you’re properly connected to power or that the generator is running.
• Inspect the battery charge level—a weak or dead battery may need recharging or replacing.
• Reset breakers and check fuses in both your RV panel and your converter box.
• If plugged into a campground pedestal, test the outlet with a voltage meter to confirm power is flowing.

RV Fridge Not Cooling Properly

Symptoms: Fridge is warm, takes too long to cool, or isn’t staying cold.

Fix It:

• Make sure your RV is level—fridges (both propane and electric types) must be level to cool effectively.
• Check that the fridge is set to the right power source (electric or propane).
• Determine your fridge type:
• 12V Fridges: Check that your battery is fully charged and connections are clean. Almost all new RVs come with a 12V fridge. Note: These fridges don’t have external vents.
• Propane Fridges: Ensure propane is flowing and the burner is igniting. Inspect external vents for nests, blockages, or debris—these can restrict airflow and cooling.
• Don't overload! Airflow is crucial inside all fridge types, so leave room for proper cooling circulation.

Low Water Pressure or No Water Flow

Symptoms: Water barely trickles from faucets, or no water comes out at all.

Fix It:

• Check the campground water supply—if using city water, ensure the hose is properly connected and not kinked.
• If using your fresh water tank, make sure the water pump is turned on.
• Inspect water filters for clogs—a dirty filter can restrict water flow.
• If water is sputtering, air may be trapped in the lines—run all faucets until the flow evens out.

Slide-Out Won't Extend or Retract

Symptoms: Slide-out motor makes noise but doesn’t move, or the slide moves unevenly.

Fix It:

• Check the battery voltage—slide-outs require sufficient power to operate.
• Inspect the slide-out rails for debris or obstructions inside and outside the unit that could interfere with smooth operation.
• If the motor runs but the slide doesn’t move, check for blown fuses.
• Manually override the slide-out mechanism if needed (refer to your RV manual for instructions).

Roof Leak or Window Seals Letting in Water

Symptoms: Water spots on the ceiling, damp cabinets, or soft areas on the roof.

Fix It:

• Inspect roof seams, vents, and windows for cracked or peeling sealant.
• If you find gaps, apply fresh RV sealant to prevent further water intrusion.
• Check slide-out seals—if they’re worn or cracked, replace them.
